Google Discover for Indian Small Businesses
Google Discover can send tens of thousands of free visits to a single article overnight — no search query involved. Here is how it actually works, what makes a page eligible, and why an Indian small business should treat Discover as upside, never as the plan.
Google Discover is the feed of articles and videos that appears on the Google app home screen and the Android home screen, chosen by Google based on what each person seems interested in — not on anything they searched for. For an Indian small business, it is one of the few free channels where a single good article can reach tens of thousands of phones overnight. It is also unpredictable, so treat it as upside, never as a plan you depend on.
How Discover is different from Search
Search is pull: someone types a query and Google answers it. Discover is push: Google decides to show your page to someone who never searched for it, because their behaviour suggests they would want it. That single difference changes everything about what works. There are no keywords to target. Freshness, a strong image and genuine interest in the topic matter far more than exact-match phrasing. And because the audience in India is overwhelmingly mobile and English-plus-regional, Discover rewards content that reads well on a phone and speaks to a real, current interest.
What you need to be eligible
You do not apply for Discover. Google pulls from pages it has already indexed, so the baseline is simply being indexable and meeting Google's content policies. Beyond that, a handful of things decide whether you actually get shown:
| Factor | What Google wants |
|---|---|
| Large image | A high-quality image at least 1200px wide, enabled for Google via max-image-preview:large. This is the single biggest Discover lever most sites miss. |
| Timely or interest-led topic | Content tied to a current interest, trend or recent change — not an evergreen definition page. |
| Honest titles | No clickbait, no withholding information, no exaggeration. Discover actively suppresses these. |
| E-E-A-T signals | A clear author, real expertise and a trustworthy site — the same groundwork as search. |
| Mobile-clean pages | Fast, readable on a phone, no intrusive interstitials. |
What actually works for an Indian small business
Discover favours topics people in your audience are curious about right now, which is good news for a local business that knows its market. A clinic can write about a seasonal health concern that is spiking in its city; a boutique can cover a festival-season trend; a marketer can explain a change that just happened, the way this very blog covers Google updates. The pattern is the same: a current, specific, genuinely interesting angle, with a strong lead image and an honest headline.
What does not work: thin listicles, definition pages, and anything that reads as written only to catch traffic. Those are exactly what the September 2026 spam update was built to catch, and they do not get Discover reach either.
How to give yourself the best chance
- Add a real, wide feature image (1200px+) to every article, and confirm
max-image-preview:largeis set so Google may show it large. Most Indian small-business sites fail here first. - Write to a current interest, not a timeless definition. Tie the piece to a season, a trend, a change or a local event.
- Keep headlines honest. Say exactly what the article delivers. Curiosity is fine; withholding the answer is penalised.
- Make the author real. A named author with a genuine bio and track record helps both Discover and E-E-A-T.
- Watch the Discover report in Search Console. It only appears once you have had Discover impressions — that is your signal that something is working, and which topics to do more of.
The honest expectation
Discover traffic is a spike, not a salary. It arrives without warning, lasts a day or two, and leaves. You cannot build a lead pipeline on it the way you can on local SEO and a strong Google Business Profile, because you do not control when or whether Google shows you. Treat it as a bonus layer on top of search: publish genuinely interesting, well-imaged, honest content, and when Discover picks one up, enjoy the reach — but keep the channels you actually control at the centre of your plan.
