Technical SEO Basics Every Business Owner Should Know
Technical SEO sounds intimidating. The fundamentals aren't. Ignore them and they'll quietly cap your rankings.
"Technical SEO" sounds like something only a developer should worry about. It isn't. Any business owner can understand the fundamentals, and ignoring them costs you. I regularly meet owners who spent months writing genuinely good content, only to find it capped because Google can't properly access, read or trust their site. You don't need to write code. You need to know what to check. Here's the whole thing in plain English, in the order that matters for a small Indian business with mostly mobile traffic.
What technical SEO actually means
Strip away the jargon and technical SEO is about four jobs: helping Google crawl your site (find your pages), render it (load it as a visitor would), index it (store it so it can show in results) and trust it (decide it's safe and legitimate enough to rank). The part most people miss: a brilliant article Google can't crawl, can't load on a phone, or has been accidentally told to ignore will never rank. Your site can look perfect to you and be invisible to search engines. That gap is where technical SEO lives.
Crawlability and indexing: can Google even see your pages?
This is the foundation, so I always start here. Three things control whether your pages get found and stored:
- robots.txt: a small file at
yoursite.com/robots.txttelling search engines which areas they may visit. Handy for keeping bots out of admin pages. Dangerous when it accidentally blocks pages you want ranked. - sitemap.xml: a list of every page you want Google to know about, like handing it a table of contents instead of hoping it stumbles across everything. Submit it once in Google Search Console.
- The "noindex" tag: the silent killer. A single line of code that tells Google "do not show this page." Fine on a thank-you or login page. Disastrous on your homepage. It gets left behind constantly after a site moves from a staging version to live, where "noindex" is often on by default and nobody switches it off.
To check, open Google Search Console (free), paste a page URL into the inspection bar at the top, and it tells you in plain words whether the page is indexed and, if not, why. If it says "Crawled – currently not indexed" or "Excluded by noindex tag," you've found a problem worth fixing today.
Site speed and Core Web Vitals
Slow pages lose rankings and leads. On a phone (where most of your visitors in India are) people abandon a page that hasn't loaded in a couple of seconds. Google measures speed and stability through three metrics called Core Web Vitals:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how long until the main thing on screen (usually your hero image or headline) appears. "Does it feel fast." Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page reacts when someone taps a button or menu. "Does it feel responsive." INP replaced the older "FID" metric in 2024, so if a guide still mentions FID, it's out of date.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): whether things jump around as the page loads, like when you go to tap a link and an image shoves it down. "Does it feel stable."
For small business sites the number one cause of slow speed is almost always the same: huge, unoptimised images. A photo straight off a phone camera can be 4–6 MB; properly sized and compressed it can be under 200 KB and look identical on screen. So before anything fancy, compress your images and save them at the size they're actually displayed. A decent host matters too. Cheap, overloaded shared hosting taxes every visit. Test any page free at Google PageSpeed Insights, and read the "mobile" tab, not desktop.
Mobile-friendliness is not optional
Google ranks your site on its mobile version, not the desktop one, and for most of my clients in Pune the bulk of traffic is on phones anyway, so that's where the real audience is. A "responsive" design adjusts the layout to fit whatever screen it's on, so text stays readable and buttons stay tappable without pinching and zooming. The honest test costs nothing: open your own site on your phone, read a paragraph, tap your main button, fill in your contact form. If any of that is fiddly, you're losing customers and rankings together.
HTTPS: the padlock is non-negotiable
HTTPS is the little padlock next to your address bar. It means the connection between visitor and site is encrypted, so details like a phone number or enquiry can't be easily intercepted. Sites without it get openly labelled "Not secure" by the browser, which scares people off before they read a word, and Google treats it as a basic ranking signal. The certificate (SSL/TLS) is usually free through your host and is a one-time setup. If your site still loads on http:// rather than https://, fix this before anything else.
Site structure and internal linking
Both Google and your visitors find pages by following links. A clean structure keeps your important pages a click or two from the homepage, with related pages linking to each other in plain, descriptive text. The thing to avoid is an orphan page: a page nothing else links to; if nothing points to it, visitors can't reach it and Google may never find it, however good it is. One habit fixes most of this: whenever you publish something new, link to it from at least one existing, relevant page. It's also how a good SEO services engagement compounds. Every internal link spreads ranking strength across the site.
Canonical tags and duplicate content
Sometimes the same content is reachable through more than one web address, with and without "www," or with tracking bits on the end of a URL. To a search engine these look like separate, duplicate pages competing with each other. A canonical tag is one line of code that tells Google "this is the master version. Count this one." You rarely manage it by hand; most decent platforms handle it automatically. You just need to know the term, so that if an audit flags "duplicate content" or "canonical issues," it isn't a mystery.
Structured data (schema): a light but useful touch
Structured data, also called schema markup, is a behind-the-scenes label spelling out what your content is: "this is a business, here's its address, phone and hours," or "this is an article by this author." It doesn't change what visitors see; it helps machines understand it. The payoff is twofold: it makes you eligible for richer Google results (star ratings, FAQs, business details), and it makes your information easier for AI answer tools to read and cite correctly. The issues that quietly hurt small business sites
After auditing a lot of local sites, the same culprits come up again and again, and none are exotic: no sitemap submitted, an accidental "noindex" hiding whole pages, massive unoptimised images, broken links and 404 errors that waste crawl time, important pages blocked in robots.txt, and slow, overcrowded hosting. Each is quiet (your site looks fine to you) and each is fixable.
If Google can't crawl it, can't load it on a phone, or has been told to ignore it, your content never gets a fair chance, however good it is.
A checklist you can run yourself today
You can sanity-check most of this in under half an hour, no developer needed:
- Every page shows
https://with a padlock in the address bar. - Visiting
yoursite.com/sitemap.xmllists your pages, and that sitemap is submitted in Search Console. - Inspecting your homepage and main service pages in Search Console says "URL is on Google", not "noindex" or "currently not indexed."
- Your site is easy to read and tap on your own phone, contact form included, and your main page loads in roughly 2–3 seconds on the mobile PageSpeed tab.
- Your images are compressed. No multi-megabyte camera files.
- Every page is linked from at least one other page (no orphans), and clicking around you don't hit broken links or 404s.
What to do yourself, and what's worth handing over
Plenty here is genuinely DIY. Compressing images, testing your site on your phone, submitting a sitemap and checking a few pages in Search Console are all things a non-technical owner can and should do, and they catch a surprising share of the damage. Worth getting help with is the diagnosis and the non-obvious fixes: finding the stray "noindex," working out why mobile speed is poor, untangling canonical issues, fixing redirects and adding schema correctly. These are mostly one-time fixes that keep paying off for years, which is what makes them worth doing properly once.
