Ads in Google AI Mode: What Advertisers Should Actually Know

Google now shows ads inside both AI Overviews and AI Mode, but the two are not the same placement and India is not confirmed for both. Here is exactly what Google has published, what is still unconfirmed, and what a small Indian advertiser should do about it.

AI Mode ads are Google Search ads that can now appear inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, pulled automatically from campaign types you may already be running rather than from a placement you switch on directly. As of September 2026, ads inside AI Overviews are confirmed live in India. Ads inside AI Mode itself are confirmed live only in the US.

I run Google Ads for shops, clinics and service businesses across Pune, the same accounts behind my guide to Google Ads for small business. This guide sticks to what Google itself has actually published about ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews, separates that from what trade coverage is reporting, and ends with what I would actually do with a small Indian budget right now.

What are ads in AI Mode, exactly?

Ads in AI Mode are ordinary Google Ads, from campaign types you likely already run, that Google's system can now insert into an AI Mode conversation or an AI Overview when it judges them relevant to the question and commercially useful to show.

You do not create a new "AI Mode campaign" to get these placements. There is no separate targeting setting, no dedicated budget line, and, based on everything Google has published so far, no way to opt out of a campaign type once it becomes eligible.

This is a different mechanism to organic citation, which I cover in Google AI Mode in India. Google's own AI features and your website page is explicit that no special markup or optimisation gets a page cited for free in the answer text. Ads are a separate, paid path onto the same page, and the two should not be planned as one project.

Where do these ads actually appear?

Inside AI Overviews, Google's own Ads Help documentation describes ads showing above the AI Overview, below it, or embedded within it, and the ad slot is reported inside your account as a Top Ads placement rather than its own line item.

Inside AI Mode, Google's Marketing Live 2026 announcement described new formats built specifically for the conversational format: Conversational Discovery ads, an AI-powered Shopping ad format, and a Highlighted Answer that can appear directly inside a recommendation list AI Mode generates for the user.

In every case Google says the placement stays clearly labelled. The AI Overviews help page states ads are only shown when they match both the user's query and the AI Overview's own content, and the Marketing Live announcement confirms the new AI Mode formats stay labelled "Sponsored."

Is India included? What is confirmed, and what genuinely is not

Ads inside AI Overviews are confirmed for India. Ads inside AI Mode itself are not, as of the time of writing (September 2026).

Google's own Ads Help page, About ads and AI Overviews, states ads in AI Overviews are available in English on mobile and desktop devices in a named list of countries that explicitly includes India, alongside Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and the US.

AI Mode is a different placement, and Google has not published the same country list for it. Google's own Ads in AI Mode announcement page names no country at all. Reputable trade coverage that has actually tested the placement describes it as live in the US only as of August 2026, pulled from Performance Max, Shopping and broad match Search, with no confirmed date yet for India or the UK.

That distinction is easy to miss because both surfaces get called "AI Mode advertising" loosely in casual pitches. If a vendor offers you "AI Mode ads for India" right now, ask them to name the exact Google Ads Help page confirming that placement for this country, since I could not find one as of writing.

Google has published one relevant data point ahead of the ad placement itself reaching every market: a Google-commissioned Ipsos survey run in December 2025 across 25 countries, India included, found that 75 percent of people who used AI features in Search reported making faster, more confident purchasing decisions. That is consumer research about AI Mode generally, not proof that ads are running inside AI Mode in India, but it is Google's own reason for investing in this ad surface before it fully arrives in every market.

Surface Confirmed in India Eligible campaign types Reporting
Ads in AI Overviews Yes, English, mobile and desktop Search, Shopping, Performance Max Shown as Top Ads, no separate line
Ads in AI Mode Not confirmed; live in the US only as of writing Performance Max, Shopping, broad match Search, AI Max for Search Blended into existing campaign metrics

Which campaign types actually make you eligible?

You cannot target AI Overviews or AI Mode directly the way you might target a placement or a device. Eligibility comes from the campaign type and settings you already run, not from a checkbox you tick.

For AI Overviews, Google's Ads Help page names Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns as eligible, and recommends broad match, keywordless targeting and Smart Bidding to give the system the flexibility it needs to match an ad to the AI Overview's content.

For AI Mode, the same foundation applies, plus AI Max for Search specifically, Google's beta layer that adds broader search-term matching, automatically generated headline and description variants, and final URL expansion on top of an existing Search campaign.

A tightly scoped exact-match Search campaign with manual bidding and a fixed set of headlines is the profile least likely to show up in either surface, simply because Google's system has the least room to adapt it to a conversational query it did not see coming. My Quality Score guide covers the asset and relevance side of that same equation.

Say a CA firm in Baner runs a single exact-match Search campaign for "CA near me" with manual bidding and three years of unchanged headlines. That structure is unlikely to ever show inside an AI Overview, since Google's own guidance points to broad match and Smart Bidding instead. The fix is not a new campaign, it is loosening the match type and switching to a Smart Bidding strategy on the campaign that already exists, then watching the search-terms report closely for the first month to catch anything irrelevant early.

How are these ads labelled, and can you opt out or target them?

Every source I opened, Google's own Ads Help page and the Marketing Live 2026 announcement alike, says the ad stays visibly labelled, generally as "Sponsored," regardless of which surface it lands in.

There is no opt-in and, as far as Google has published, no opt-out either. If a campaign meets the eligibility bar, Google's system can choose to place it, and you do not see a separate toggle for it beyond the Top Ads reporting inside AI Overviews.

That lack of granular control is the real trade-off. You get access to a growing surface without spending anything extra to switch it on, but you also cannot isolate its performance from the rest of the campaign, or step away from it while leaving the campaign running everywhere else.

What does this mean for a small business advertiser in India right now?

For India specifically, plan around ads in AI Overviews as the surface that is actually live, not ads inside AI Mode itself, which Google has not confirmed here yet.

Practically, that means the same account hygiene work matters more than any new setting: accurate conversion tracking, Smart Bidding once you have enough conversion data, and Search campaigns built on broad match rather than a narrow exact-match list, since Google's own guidance names exactly these as what makes a campaign eligible.

If you already run local Google Ads campaigns with call tracking and WhatsApp click tracking in place, you likely already qualify for AI Overview ad placements without changing anything structural. The remaining work is making sure your assets, headlines, descriptions and landing pages are strong enough that you would actually want Google choosing them for a conversational context.

For scale, my guide on Google Ads for small business puts a realistic starting budget at Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 a month for a single-location business, and none of that changes because of AI Overview or AI Mode eligibility. Spend the same budget on the same disciplined campaign structure, and treat AI Overview eligibility as bonus reach the campaign earns by being well built, not a separate line item you budget for on its own.

What are the risks?

The biggest one is losing query-level control. Broad match combined with an AI-selected placement means you cannot always see or predict the exact question your ad was matched to, which makes a clean negative keyword list, covered in my negative keywords guide, more important, not less.

The second is junk leads from a mismatched context. An ad shown inside a research-style AI Mode answer can pull in a click from someone comparing options in general rather than someone ready to buy, and my guide on why Google Ads is not converting covers exactly how that shows up in your numbers.

The third is thin reporting. Because AI Overview and AI Mode placements blend into Top Ads and your existing campaign metrics, you cannot currently isolate their cost per lead the way you can for a dedicated campaign, so judge the account's overall trend rather than trying to attribute results to this one placement.

What I would actually do with a small budget right now

I would not build a campaign around AI Mode ads today, especially for an India-based account, given the placement is not confirmed here yet. I would build a normal, well-tracked Search campaign the way I cover in Google Ads setup for small business, and let AI Overview eligibility arrive as a side effect of doing that well.

I would prioritise fixing conversion tracking and moving toward Smart Bidding over chasing any single new placement, since both improve every surface your ads already reach, covered in more depth in my Google Ads budget guide and Performance Max guide.

I would revisit this page every quarter rather than treating it as settled. Google has previously updated its own AI Overviews ad documentation quietly, without a dedicated announcement, when the eligible country list changed, so the safest habit is checking the primary source yourself rather than trusting a single article's snapshot, including this one.

How to make a campaign eligible for AI Mode and AI Overview ad placements

None of these five steps require a new campaign type. They are the same account hygiene that improves every surface, applied in the order I actually run it.

Step 1: Fix conversion tracking first

Confirm phone calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions all fire as conversions before touching anything else. Every later step, especially Smart Bidding, depends on this data being accurate.

Step 2: Move core Search campaigns onto broad match with Smart Bidding

Shift your best-performing ad groups from exact match toward broad match once conversion tracking is solid, and pair it with a Smart Bidding strategy rather than manual CPC, since Google names this combination directly as what it looks for.

Step 3: Turn on AI Max for Search once you have conversion history

With a few weeks of clean conversion data behind you, enable AI Max for Search on a campaign you can monitor closely, and review the extra search terms and generated assets it introduces rather than leaving it unattended.

Step 4: Feed Performance Max and Shopping with a clean, complete feed

If you sell physical products, keep your Merchant Center feed current with accurate prices, stock and images, since Shopping and Performance Max are both named as eligible campaign types for these placements.

Step 5: Review Top Ads and search-term reports weekly

Since AI Overview and AI Mode activity is not broken out separately, watch your Top Ads segment and search-terms report weekly for unfamiliar queries, and add negatives the same way you would for any other campaign.

Common mistakes I see advertisers make

Treating AI Mode ads and AI Overview ads as one identical placement. They share a foundation but have different confirmed availability, and conflating them leads to planning around a surface that is not actually live where you advertise.

Buying "AI Mode ads for India" from a vendor without asking for a citable Google source. I looked for one while researching this guide and could not find it.

Switching an entire account to broad match without a negative keyword list ready first. Broad match plus AI selection without guardrails is how a tight budget disappears inside a week.

Ignoring the Top Ads segment in reporting because it looks unfamiliar. It is currently the only place these placements show up at all, so skipping it means flying blind on a growing share of impressions.

Honest limits: when this genuinely is not worth chasing yet

If your monthly budget is already thin, spending time optimising specifically for a placement you cannot isolate in reporting is not a good use of that time. Fix the fundamentals covered in SEO vs Google Ads first, and let eligibility follow.

For an India-based account, planning around ads inside AI Mode itself is premature, since Google has not confirmed the placement here. Plan around AI Overviews instead, where the eligibility and country list are actually published.

None of this changes what has always driven a Google Ads account: accurate tracking, a realistic budget, and a landing page worth the click. A campaign that fails at those basics will not be rescued by a new AI placement, no matter how it is labelled.

Frequently asked questions

Can I target my ads to show inside Google AI Mode?

No. There is no targeting setting, placement option or bid adjustment for AI Mode or AI Overviews specifically. Eligibility comes automatically from running a Search campaign with broad match, a Shopping campaign, or a Performance Max campaign that meets Google's normal quality bar. You influence your odds by strengthening the campaign itself, not by switching on a feature named AI Mode.

Are ads in AI Mode live in India yet?

Not confirmed as of September 2026. Google's own Ads Help page confirms ads inside AI Overviews are live in India, in English, on mobile and desktop. Ads inside AI Mode itself are a separate placement, and Google has not published an India date for it. Treat any claim that AI Mode ads are running in India with scepticism until Google's own documentation names the country.

Do I need Performance Max to show up in AI Overview ads?

No. Google's Ads Help page names three eligible campaign types for AI Overview ad placements: Search, Shopping and Performance Max. A well-tracked Search campaign on broad match with Smart Bidding can qualify on its own. Performance Max and Shopping widen your reach if you sell physical products, but neither is a strict requirement for eligibility.

How will I know if my ad showed inside an AI Overview or AI Mode?

You will not see a dedicated report for it today. Google groups these impressions under the existing Top Ads segment inside your normal campaign reporting, blended with other top-of-page placements, and AI Mode placements are not separated out at all yet. Judge overall account trends rather than trying to isolate this one placement's numbers.

Should a small business in India change its Google Ads strategy for AI Mode right now?

Not specifically for AI Mode, since the placement is not confirmed in India yet. The account changes worth making, accurate conversion tracking, broad match with Smart Bidding, and a clean product feed, are the same ones that improve every surface your ads already reach, including AI Overviews, which is live here.
