Google AI Mode in India: What It Is and What It Actually Changes
Google AI Mode launched in India in June 2025 and now runs in nine languages, but there is still no such thing as ranking number one inside it. Here is exactly what is confirmed, what changed for search behaviour, and what a small business should actually do about it.
Google AI Mode in India lets you ask a full, multi-part question in Google Search and get back one synthesised answer built from several web pages, plus follow-up questions, instead of a list of ten blue links. It launched in India in June 2025 and now works in English, Hindi and seven more Indian languages.
I track AI Mode inside Google Search Console for clinics, real estate teams and D2C brands across Pune, the same accounts behind my guide to how AI Overviews affect SEO. This guide stays India-specific: the exact rollout dates, the languages that actually work today, and what genuinely changes for a business owner here, not a global press release rewritten with an India headline.
What is Google AI Mode, exactly?
Google AI Mode is a separate way to search inside Google, sitting next to the regular Web results tab, built on a custom version of Gemini tuned for search rather than general conversation.
Instead of returning ten ranked links, it reads across several web pages and writes one longer answer to your actual question, then lets you ask a follow-up in the same thread without starting a fresh search. Google built it for the kind of question a single search result rarely answers well: multi-part, comparative or research-style questions.
AI Mode is not the same feature as AI Overviews, the shorter summary that sometimes appears above regular results. I cover that distinction fully in AI Mode vs AI Overviews, so this guide stays focused on the India-specific facts: launch dates, languages, and what actually changes for a business owner here.
When did AI Mode actually launch in India?
Google brought AI Mode to India on 24 June 2025, as an experiment inside Search Labs and in English only, according to Google's own India product blog.
That Labs requirement did not last long. By 8 July 2025, Google's India blog confirmed AI Mode was rolling out to Search and the Google app with no Labs sign-up required, which is the point it stopped being an opt-in experiment and became part of ordinary Google Search for Indian users.
At the time of writing (September 2026), you do not need to enable anything in Search Labs to see the AI Mode tab in India. If you still see only Web, Images, Shopping and News, sign into the same Google account you use for search and check labs.google.com, since a handful of related experiments still route through Labs even though the core AI Mode tab no longer does.
| Milestone | Date | Confirmed by |
|---|---|---|
| AI Mode launches in India (Search Labs, English) | 24 June 2025 | Google India blog |
| Labs requirement dropped, rolls out to all Search users | 8 July 2025 | Google India blog |
| Hindi added | 8 September 2025 | Google India blog |
| Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu added | 8 October 2025 | Google India blog |
| Search Live (voice and camera) debuts, India first outside the US | 8 October 2025 | Google India blog |
Which languages does it support in India, and does it work in Hindi?
AI Mode worked only in English for its first two and a half months in India. Google added Hindi on 8 September 2025, describing it as a rollout for users around the world rather than an India-only update, in a post on Google's India blog.
A month later, on 8 October 2025, Google's India blog announced seven more Indian languages at once: Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The same post introduced Search Live, a voice-and-camera way to talk to AI Mode in real time, and India was the first country outside the US to get it, in English and Hindi.
None of Google's posts claim AI Mode understands mixed Hindi-English typing, commonly called Hinglish, as a distinct feature, so I am not going to claim that either. What I can confirm is that it now runs natively in nine languages spoken across India, which matters once your customers start asking questions the way they actually speak rather than in formal English.
How do you actually use Google AI Mode?
Open Google Search on your phone or desktop and look for an AI Mode tab next to Web, Images and News, or open the Google app and look for it in the search bar. If your account has it, tapping that tab is all it takes.
Inside AI Mode you can type a question the way you would ask a person, tap the microphone icon to ask it by voice, or point the camera at something and ask about it, since Google built the feature to bring Lens capabilities directly into AI Mode. After the first answer, you can ask a follow-up in the same thread instead of retyping context into a fresh search.
For a small business, the useful habit is not asking AI Mode about your own business, though that is the first step of the checklist further down this guide. It is asking the questions your actual customers ask, the way they would ask them, and reading what AI Mode says back before you change a single page.
What can AI Mode do that a plain Google search cannot?
AI Mode is built for complex, multi-part questions, the kind that would normally take two or three separate searches to answer, because it holds context across a whole conversation rather than treating every query as a fresh start.
It also pulls from real-time sources beyond the standard web index, including Google's Knowledge Graph and live shopping data, so a question with a comparison or price angle can return a more current answer than a single static page might.
The practical difference between the three surfaces you will hear about most often comes down to how each one triggers and what it hands back:
| Surface | What triggers it | What you get | Follow-ups |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Search (Web) | Any query | Ranked list of links and snippets | No |
| AI Overviews | Select queries on the regular results page | A short generated summary above the results, with source links | No |
| AI Mode | A question asked inside the AI Mode tab | A fuller synthesised answer with sources, built for complex questions | Yes |
For most Indian small business queries, near-me and service-plus-city searches still lean on regular Search and the map pack rather than AI Mode, a pattern I cover for the local case specifically in Google AI Overviews for local business. AI Mode tends to show up more for the research-style question someone asks before they have picked a business to call.
How does Google decide which pages AI Mode cites, and can you rank number one in it?
There is no rank one inside AI Mode, or inside any AI-generated answer. The only outcome worth aiming for is being cited, linked or mentioned in the answer, which is a different goal from ranking a page at the top of a results list.
Google's own page for site owners, AI features and your website, is direct about this: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations are necessary beyond ordinary SEO. The same page states that a page must already be indexed and eligible to appear in regular Search with a snippet before it can ever be cited.
That source also confirms AI Overview and AI Mode clicks and impressions are not broken out as a separate line anywhere in Search Console. They sit inside the ordinary Performance report, under the Web search type, alongside every other kind of search result. If you want the full walkthrough of that report, I cover it in Google Search Console for beginners.
In practice this means there is no separate "AI Mode SEO" checklist to chase. A page that already ranks reasonably well, answers a specific question clearly, and carries accurate schema is a page AI Mode can quote. A page that does not rank at all for the question has nothing to be cited from in the first place.
What does this actually change for a small business in India?
The businesses I see gain the most from AI Mode and AI Overviews together are the ones whose Google Business Profile, reviews and website already agree with each other on the basic facts: what you do, where you are, and what it costs.
A complete, actively managed Google Business Profile is not optional groundwork anymore. It is one of the few structured, verified sources AI Mode can pull from with real confidence, and my Google Business Profile optimization guide and free Google Business Profile Optimizer cover the setup in full.
Review text carries more weight than the star rating alone, since AI systems can read what a review actually says, not just count stars. My guide on how to get more Google reviews covers a system for asking that does not feel pushy.
Citation-style listings such as Justdial still matter for the same reason they always did: consistent name, address and phone details across the web, and I cover the free listing process in my Justdial listing guide. None of this is new advice invented for AI Mode. It is the same local SEO foundation covered in what is local SEO, now with one more surface reading it.
The language rollout matters more than most business owners assume. Once a customer can ask AI Mode a question in Marathi, Tamil or Hindi and get a usable answer, a business whose reviews and profile content exist only in English is working from a smaller pool of source material than a competitor whose profile reflects how customers actually write.
What should you actually do about it this quarter?
Do not rebuild your website around AI Mode. Fix the handful of things that feed every AI surface at once: an accurate Google Business Profile, honest FAQ content in your customers' own words, and pages that answer one specific question clearly instead of everything at once.
For the deeper, tactic-by-tactic playbook, I cover the full process in how to rank in Google AI Mode and how to appear in Google AI Overviews. This guide stays deliberately narrow to the India-specific facts, since the tactics themselves do not differ much by country.
If you run paid search alongside your organic work, note that AI Mode is starting to carry ads too, on different terms to AI Overviews and not yet confirmed for India. I cover exactly what is verified so far, and what is not, in ads in Google AI Mode.
If you are still deciding whether any of this is worth the effort against a shifting organic click pattern, my honest read on the wider traffic picture is in does SEO still work in 2026 and how AI Overviews impact SEO.
How to check how AI Mode answers questions about your business
This is the same five-step check I run on client accounts every month, and it takes under half an hour once you have your question list ready.
Step 1: List your top five customer questions
Pull them from your last month of WhatsApp messages, calls and walk-in questions rather than guessing from your desk. These should be the actual words a customer uses, not the polished version you would put on a brochure.
Step 2: Ask each one inside AI Mode in English
Open the AI Mode tab, type or speak each question exactly as a customer would ask it, and read the full answer before judging anything. Note whether your business is named, linked, or absent entirely from the response.
Step 3: Repeat in Hindi or your customers' language
If a meaningful share of your customers search or message you in Hindi, Marathi or another supported Indian language, ask the same questions again in that language. A business cited in English can be completely absent from the same question asked in Marathi.
Step 4: Cross-check the same phrase in Search Console
Filter the Performance report to the exact question phrase and look at impressions and average position under the Web search type, since that is where AI Mode and AI Overview activity shows up, mixed in with everything else. A climbing impression count on a question phrase is often an early sign before a citation appears.
Step 5: Re-run the check monthly and track the trend
AI Mode answers are not fixed. The same question can return a different answer, with different sources, from one month to the next without you changing anything. Judge the direction over a few months, not a single reading.
Common mistakes I see business owners make with AI Mode
Assuming AI Mode is the same as AI Overviews and applying identical advice to both. They are related but distinct surfaces with different triggers, and I keep them separate throughout this guide for that reason.
Writing FAQ content to catch a keyword instead of answering a real question. Generic filler is exactly what a synthesised answer has no reason to quote.
Testing only in English. Given how recently the Indian-language rollout landed, a business that never checks Hindi, Marathi or another regional language is judging its own visibility on an incomplete picture.
Chasing a claimed "AI Mode ranking" service from a vendor. There is no ranking position to sell inside AI Mode, only a citation that Google's own system decides on at the moment of the search.
Honest limits: what AI Mode visibility will not do for you
AI Mode will not fix a Google Business Profile with three reviews and a wrong phone number, no matter how well the rest of the website is written. The underlying facts still have to be accurate and complete before anything can cite them with confidence.
There is also no way to guarantee a citation, and I would treat any promise of one with real scepticism. Two very similar pages can be treated differently by the same AI Mode answer, and a page cited last month can quietly stop being cited this month without you changing anything on it.
For a single-location service business living on near-me searches and the map pack, AI Mode is not where most of your calls come from yet, and the fundamentals in what is local SEO still do more day-to-day work than anything specific to AI Mode.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Mode available in India right now?
Yes. Google launched AI Mode in India on 24 June 2025 inside Search Labs, then removed the Labs requirement on 8 July 2025, so it now appears as a normal tab in Google Search and the Google app for eligible accounts. At the time of writing (September 2026), no separate sign-up or opt-in is needed to see it, though Google continues to test individual features such as Search Live through Labs before a wider release.
Does Google AI Mode work in Hindi and other Indian languages?
Yes. AI Mode launched in India in English only, added Hindi on 8 September 2025, then added Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu together on 8 October 2025. That gives it native support in nine languages spoken across India, though Google has not published any claim that it understands mixed Hindi-English typing as a distinct feature.
What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are the shorter generated summary that can appear above regular results on an ordinary Google search. AI Mode is a separate tab with its own fuller, conversational answer, built for multi-part questions and able to hold a follow-up conversation. Both can cite your website and both run on similar underlying signals, but they trigger differently, and I compare them fully in a dedicated guide.
Can my website rank number one in Google AI Mode?
No, and no legitimate service can promise that either. AI Mode does not produce a ranked list of positions the way regular Search does, so there is nothing numbered to occupy. The realistic goal is being cited, linked or mentioned in an AI Mode answer, which depends on the same underlying SEO fundamentals as ranking well in regular Search, not a separate or purchasable tactic.
Will Google AI Mode reduce traffic to my website?
It can, for broad informational questions that AI Mode can answer completely on its own, but Indian small business queries tend to lean local and transactional, categories that have held up better in the accounts I manage. AI Overview and AI Mode activity is not broken out separately in Search Console, it sits inside the normal Web totals, so watch your Performance report by query rather than assuming a drop is caused by AI Mode specifically.
