Zero-Click Searches: Meaning, 2026 Data and What to Do

A zero-click search ends without anyone visiting a website, because Google or an AI assistant answered the question directly on the results page. Here is what current studies actually show about how common that has become, which queries still send a click, and the playbook for winning attention even when nobody clicks through.

Zero-click searches are searches that end without anyone visiting a website, because Google or an AI assistant answered the question directly on the results page. They are not new, a weather forecast or a sports score has worked this way for years, but AI Overviews and AI Mode have pushed the share of searches that end this way to a level the published data now puts above two in three.

I watch this pattern in Search Console every week across the client accounts I manage in Pune, and this guide covers what the actual published research says about zero-click search, not a guess, plus the playbook I use once a query has clearly gone zero-click.

What a zero-click search actually is, with real examples

A zero-click search happens the moment Google, or an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Gemini, puts the full answer on the results page itself, leaving no reason for the searcher to click anywhere. The oldest and least controversial examples are a weather forecast, a unit conversion, a sports score, a stock price and a simple calculation, results Google has answered directly for well over a decade without anyone calling it a crisis.

Three newer formats do the same thing at a much larger scale. A featured snippet pulls one paragraph or list out of a ranking page and displays it above the normal results. A local pack answers "near me" searches with a map and three business listings before a single blue link appears. An AI Overview or an AI Mode conversation goes further still, generating an original summary from several sources at once and citing them, sometimes prominently, sometimes in a collapsed list a searcher never opens.

Not every zero-click search is a loss. Someone who searches your business name to find your phone number, gets it from a knowledge panel, and calls you directly had a zero-click search that ended in a customer. The distinction that actually matters for a small business is not whether a click happened, it is whether the searcher got what they needed from you in some form, a call, a WhatsApp message, or a visit to your physical location, none of which show up as a website click.

How common zero-click search has become in 2026

The most current figure comes from SparkToro, using Similarweb's desktop and mobile browsing panel for the United States. In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click, up from 60.45% in SparkToro's comparable 2024 benchmark, a jump of about 7.5 percentage points in two years, according to SparkToro's 2026 study. The same report notes AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches and, when present, correlate with a click-through rate nearly 60% lower than searches without one.

Pew Research Center measured the same shift from a different angle: real people, not aggregate search volume. Its study tracked the actual browsing activity of 900 US adults through March 2025, covering 68,879 unique Google searches, of which 12,593 produced an AI-generated summary. Searchers clicked through to a traditional result in just 8% of searches where an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not, and only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself, according to Pew Research's July 2025 report. The same study found searchers ended their browsing session entirely after 26% of pages with a summary, against 16% without one.

Ahrefs came at the question from the ranking page's side rather than the searcher's. It compared December 2023 data with December 2025 across 300,000 keywords, half with an AI Overview present and half without, and found the top-ranking page's average click-through rate was 58% lower on queries where an AI Overview appeared, an increase from the 34.5% figure Ahrefs reported when it first ran this comparison in April 2025, according to its February 2026 update.

Read all three together carefully rather than picking whichever number sounds most dramatic. SparkToro and Pew are both US consumer data, Ahrefs draws from its own keyword database without breaking results out by country, and none of the three publish an India-specific figure. Search behaviour in India skews more local, more WhatsApp-first and more conversational than the US panels these studies measure, so treat every number above as evidence a real shift is happening, not as your own site's number. My guide to how AI Overviews affect SEO covers what that shift looks like specifically in the Search Console accounts I manage for Indian small businesses.

Which queries still send a click, and which do not

None of the three studies above say every search went quiet. Read closely, all three point at the same split: broad, informational queries lose the most, and queries with a specific action behind them hold up far better.

A local pack still answers a "near me" search with a map and three listings, but the click those listings send to your Google Business Profile or your website barely moved, because a searcher choosing between three nearby options still needs a phone number, hours and reviews an AI summary cannot fully replace. A transactional or comparison query, checking a price, reading reviews before booking, behaves the same way, since the decision still needs evidence a one-paragraph answer cannot show. Brand searches, someone typing your business name after hearing about you elsewhere, are barely touched at all in the accounts I watch. The category losing the most is the broad, definitional query, the "what is X" or "how does Y work" search that a single AI-generated paragraph can fully satisfy without ever needing to show a source.

I go through this pattern by query type in more depth in does SEO still work in 2026, and the version specific to how AI Overviews are reshaping click-through rate by query type sits in how Google AI Overviews impact SEO. The short version worth remembering here: a zero-click search is not one thing happening equally to every page on your site, it is concentrated on the pages that were only ever built to catch a generic question.

How to find which of your own queries are going zero-click

Search Console will not hand you a "zero-click" label. Its AI features and your website documentation confirms that AI Overview and AI Mode traffic sits inside the same Web search totals as every other query, with no separate filter for it, so finding zero-click queries is a manual comparison, not a report you open and read.

Step 1: Pull your Performance report for the last three months

Open Search Console, go to Performance, Search results, and set the range to the last three months so short-term noise does not hide a real pattern. Add Impressions, Clicks, CTR and Position as visible columns.

Step 2: Sort by impressions and scan for queries with unusually low CTR

Sort the Queries tab by impressions descending, then look at the CTR column next to each one. A query with thousands of impressions and a CTR under 1 to 2% while sitting in the top five positions is the clearest zero-click signal Search Console can give you for free.

Step 3: Confirm position has not actually dropped

Check that average position for that query has stayed roughly flat over the three months. If position has also fallen, a ranking problem is at least part of the story, and my Google Search Console for beginners guide covers reading that report properly before you conclude anything about AI Overviews specifically.

Step 4: Check the live results page for that exact query

Search the query yourself in an incognito window, ideally on mobile, and note what actually sits above your listing: an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a local pack, or nothing unusual at all. This single check separates a genuine zero-click query from a page that simply needs a better title or a stronger meta description.

Step 5: Decide whether to rewrite for citation or redirect the effort

For a query worth keeping, rewrite the page to answer the exact question in its first two or three sentences and add the schema covered in my guide to ranking in Google AI Mode, aiming to be the cited source rather than the click. For a query that was only ever going to attract browsers with no buying intent, redirect that effort toward a page nearer the bottom of the funnel instead, covered next.

The zero-click playbook: five moves that still work

None of these five moves gets you back the exact click a study above measured disappearing. Each one gives a small business something to do instead of just watching the number fall.

Win the impression as brand exposure. Even a search that ends without a click still puts your name, and if you have schema in place, your logo or business details, in front of someone. Treat that appearance the way you would treat a signboard on a busy road: it will not convert on its own, but it compounds every time the same person searches again.

Target queries that still need a click. Pricing pages, comparison pages, a free tool, and any page requiring the searcher to input their own details cannot be fully answered by a summary. My own free website SEO checker is a clear example: an AI Overview can describe what an SEO checker does in one sentence, but it cannot actually run 40-plus checks against a visitor's own URL, so the click still happens. Building useful tools rather than only articles is a large part of why this site keeps earning clicks even as broad informational search softens.

Own the answer box with your name in it. Where a summary is going to appear whatever you do, being the cited source beats being ignored. That means answering the question in the page's first few sentences, adding FAQPage and Article schema so a system parsing the page has no ambiguity about what it is reading, and keeping the same facts consistent on your Google Business Profile, covered in my guide to earning featured snippets. There is no rank 1 inside an AI Overview or any AI-generated answer, since Google treats the whole block as one position regardless of how many sources it cites, so the realistic goal is being cited, linked or mentioned, never a promise of a specific ranking.

Build direct channels a summary cannot touch. A WhatsApp broadcast list or an email list reaches a past customer without needing a search at all, which makes it the most durable answer to a shift you do not control. My WhatsApp marketing guide and guide to building an email list cover starting either one this month, and both work whether or not the next algorithm update touches AI Overviews at all.

Measure beyond clicks. Impressions, branded search volume, and Google Business Profile actions, calls and direction requests, all keep counting a business even on searches that end without a click. A dental clinic that gets a call straight from its knowledge panel had a zero-click search and a paying patient in the same minute, and no click metric will ever show that connection unless you go looking for it in the right report.

What to measure instead of clicks alone

Clicks are the easiest number to track and, on their own, increasingly the wrong one to judge a page by. Pair clicks with impressions in the same Search Console view: a page with rising impressions and flat or falling clicks is not necessarily failing, it may simply be feeding an AI Overview or a featured snippet while still building the brand familiarity that shows up later as a direct or branded search.

Search Console added a dedicated Generative AI performance report in 2026, and it is worth checking even though it will not settle every question on its own. It shows impressions, how often your pages appeared inside AI Overviews or AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date, once a property has received enough AI-feature impressions to populate one, according to Search Console Help. At the time of writing (September 2026) it does not show clicks, position or which query triggered the appearance, so read it as one more visibility signal alongside the metrics below, not a replacement for them.

Branded search volume is the clearest proxy for whether all that unclicked exposure is compounding. Filter Search Console's queries for your own business name and watch the trend over several months, a rise there usually means people encountered you somewhere, an AI Overview, a local pack, a friend's recommendation, and came looking for you specifically afterward, which the ten-row sheet in my SEO KPIs guide covers as one row among several worth tracking monthly.

For a local business, Google Business Profile actions matter as much as anything in Search Console. Calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile capture customers who never touched your website at all, and none of that shows up in a zero-click discussion that only looks at organic search. If most of your traffic still comes from paid campaigns rather than search, how to get website traffic without ads covers building the organic side up alongside whatever you already run.

Honest limits: what the data cannot tell an Indian small business

Every headline figure in this guide came from a US study or a keyword database that does not publish results by country, and none of them measured a search in Hindi, Marathi or Hinglish, or a WhatsApp-first buying journey the way most of my Pune clients actually operate. Treat the direction of these studies as real and worth planning around, and treat the exact percentages as evidence from a different market, not a number to paste into your own report as if it were measured on your own site.

There is also no tool, mine included, that can tell you with certainty why a specific query's clicks fell in a specific month. An AI Overview, a seasonal dip, a competitor's new page and a genuine ranking drop can all produce the same shape in a graph, which is why step three of the process above, checking whether position actually moved, matters more than jumping straight to blaming AI Overviews for every soft month. If you want the wider, numbers-first answer on whether organic search is still worth running at all in 2026, is SEO worth it in 2026 covers that question directly rather than assuming the answer.

Common mistakes businesses make about zero-click search

I see the same handful of reactions to this data, and most of them make the situation worse rather than better.

  • Panicking over a national or global percentage instead of checking what actually happened to your own queries in Search Console first.
  • Abandoning content entirely, when the honest fix for a softened page is usually adding pricing, local detail or a genuine FAQ, not publishing nothing.
  • Treating every drop in clicks as an AI Overview problem without checking whether position moved first.
  • Chasing an AI citation on a page that is not already ranking well, when citation depends on the same ranking and structure fundamentals as ordinary SEO.
  • Ignoring Google Business Profile and WhatsApp numbers entirely, then concluding a local business is "losing" traffic when the customers simply arrived through a channel nobody was counting.

Zero-click search is a real, measured shift, not a rumour, and the three studies above show it clearly enough. What it asks of a small business is not panic, it is a shift in what gets measured and which pages get the effort, from chasing a generic definition to owning the answer box, the tool, the price list and the direct list a summary cannot replace.

Frequently asked questions

What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the searcher visiting any website, because the answer appeared directly on the results page: a weather forecast, a definition, a local pack listing, a featured snippet or an AI Overview. It is not new, Google has answered simple facts directly for years, but AI Overviews and AI Mode have made it the outcome for a majority of searches rather than a small minority. An impression on the results page still happened, so a zero-click search is a lost click, not necessarily a lost customer.

What percentage of Google searches are zero-click in 2026?

SparkToro, using Similarweb's US browsing panel, found 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in its 2024 benchmark. That figure is US consumer data and is not broken out for India, so treat it as evidence of direction rather than your own site's number. Check your own Search Console impressions against clicks per query before assuming the same share applies to your business.

Do all types of searches lose clicks to AI Overviews?

No. Published studies and the pattern across the Search Console accounts I manage both point the same way: broad, informational queries lose the most clicks, while local near-me searches, transactional and comparison queries, and searches for a business by name hold up far better. Ahrefs found the top-ranking page's click-through rate fell 58% on average when an AI Overview appeared, but that average hides a wide range depending on whether the query was a simple definition or a specific buying decision.

Should I stop publishing content if my traffic is going zero-click?

Not the content that answers a real buying question, but a generic definitional post that only ever caught a broad search is exactly the kind of page losing clicks in the studies covered in this guide. Redirect that effort toward pricing pages, comparison pages, local pages and tools a summary cannot replace, and rewrite the pages worth keeping to answer the core question in the first few sentences so you have a better chance of being the cited source instead of being skipped.

How can a small business benefit from a zero-click search?

A zero-click search can still put your business name, phone number or address in front of someone through a knowledge panel or a local pack listing, and that person can call or walk in without ever visiting your website. Treat the impression as brand exposure, keep your Google Business Profile details accurate and consistent with your website, and track calls and direction requests alongside clicks so a zero-click search that ends in a customer does not look like a failure in your reports.
