Diwali Marketing for Indian Small Businesses
Diwali 2026 is on 8 November, and the three weeks before it are the highest-intent buying window of the year. Here is a practical campaign plan — a week-by-week timeline, where to actually spend, and offers that convert by business type — not a list of festive greetings.
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, with Dhanteras on 6 November and the five-day festival running 6–10 November. For an Indian small business, the three weeks before that are the highest-intent buying window of the year. This is a practical plan for using them — what to run, when to run it, and where to spend — not a list of generic "festive greetings" ideas.
Why the run-up matters more than the day
People do not decide what to buy on Diwali; they decide in the fortnight before it, while they are planning gifts, home purchases, clothes and sweets. By 8 November most buying decisions are already made. So the work happens now: your offers, your ads and your Google Business Profile need to be visible from roughly mid-October, peak around Dhanteras (6 November), and taper after Bhai Dooj. A campaign that goes live on Diwali itself has missed the season.
A three-week Diwali campaign timeline
| Window | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ~3 weeks out (mid-Oct) | Tease & warm up | Announce the offer is coming, build a WhatsApp broadcast list, refresh your GBP photos, start retargeting past visitors. |
| ~2 weeks out | Launch the offer | Go live with the Diwali offer across Meta ads, a GBP post and a WhatsApp broadcast. This is when most of your budget should start spending. |
| Dhanteras week (2–6 Nov) | Peak push | Raise budgets, add urgency ("ends Diwali"), post daily, reply to every enquiry within minutes. Dhanteras is the single biggest buying day for many categories. |
| Diwali + after (8–10 Nov) | Convert & thank | Last-chance messaging, then switch to thank-you posts and ask happy customers for a Google review while the goodwill is fresh. |
Where to actually spend
For most local businesses the order of priority is simple and does not change at Diwali: the channels you control and that convert come first.
- Google Business Profile. Free, and it is where "near me" festive buyers look. Post your offer, update hours for the holiday, add fresh festive photos, and chase reviews through the season — see the GBP checklist.
- WhatsApp. Your warmest list. A single well-timed Diwali broadcast to past customers often out-earns a week of cold ads. Keep it to a real offer, not a greeting.
- Meta ads (Instagram + Facebook). Best for reach and new customers. Start retargeting early (cheap), then scale a simple offer ad in the two weeks before Dhanteras. Watch your cost per lead — festive competition pushes it up, so start before everyone else does.
- Google Ads, only if you already run them and have margin — CPCs spike in the festive window, so protect your budget with tight targeting.
Offer ideas that work by business type
- Retail / boutique / jewellery: early-bird Dhanteras pricing, gift bundles, and a "book now, collect before Diwali" option to beat the rush.
- Clinics & services: festive health/beauty packages (a pre-Diwali skin or dental check), gift vouchers a family member can buy for a parent.
- Restaurants & sweets: pre-order Diwali boxes with a cut-off date, corporate-gifting bulk orders, and a festive menu posted to GBP.
- Any business: a genuine thank-you discount for existing customers — it costs less to sell to them and they buy more in this window.
The one mistake to avoid
Do not pour the whole budget into a single Diwali-day post and hope. The season is a three-week build, not a one-day event, and the businesses that win are the ones visible early, consistent through Dhanteras, and fast to reply when a buyer messages. Plan the run-up, keep the channels you control at the centre, and treat the festival day as the finish line, not the start.
