AEO Services in India: What You Actually Get and How to Choose

AEO services in India range from a freelancer scoping answer engine work inside an SEO retainer to agencies charging several lakh rupees a month for a dedicated program. Here is what a real engagement includes, what it should never promise, and the questions to ask before you hire anyone.

AEO services in India range from a freelancer folding answer engine work into an existing SEO retainer, to specialist agencies quoting several lakh rupees a month for a dedicated AI visibility program. Before you hire anyone, you need to know what a real engagement includes, what no provider can honestly promise, and what a fair price actually looks like for your size of business.

I have been folding answer engine work into client SEO retainers since early 2025, and I run this exact setup on my own site. shreyasbagal.in carries an llms.txt file, a robots.txt that explicitly allows every major AI crawler by name, an IndexNow ping after every deploy, and Article, FAQPage, Person, BreadcrumbList and Speakable schema on every guide, including this one. This guide is the buyer's version of that same checklist: what to ask for, what a fair price looks like, and what nobody should be promising you.

What a real AEO service actually includes

A real AEO engagement extends SEO work rather than replacing it, so its deliverables should read like a specific task list, not a vague promise of "AI visibility." I break it into six parts when I scope this work, and every legitimate provider I have seen quote this correctly covers the same six, even under different names.

  • An audit of which existing pages already rank and which ones bury the answer under three paragraphs of scene setting.
  • Question research pulled from Search Console queries, Google's People Also Ask boxes, and the questions your own customers actually type on WhatsApp.
  • Answer-first content that states the direct answer in the first two or three sentences of a section, then expands with detail afterward.
  • Entity and schema work, including Article, FAQPage and, where relevant, LocalBusiness structured data tying your name, address and phone number to your content.
  • Third-party presence on directories, review platforms and industry sites that reinforce the same facts your own site states.
  • Measurement that tracks query-level movement, not one vanity number on a slide.

I cover the mechanics of the first three, with a worked example, in what AEO actually is and how to apply it, and a checklist version of the audit step sits in my AEO audit checklist. The schema layer deserves its own note: it is metadata, not persuasion. It hands an answer engine the "who wrote this, when, and what does it answer" information it would otherwise have to guess at. My schema markup guide and FAQ schema for Google AI Overviews guide cover the exact markup, and a proposal that skips this layer is skipping a genuinely low-cost, high-value part of the work.

The part most quotes leave out is measurement, and it is worth naming plainly because Google itself is explicit about it. Google's own page on AI features and your website states that AI Overview and AI Mode traffic is "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console" and reported inside the Performance report's Web search type, at the time of writing (September 2026). A provider claiming a private dashboard that shows your ChatGPT citation count is not working from anything Google, OpenAI or Perplexity actually publishes.

What AEO services should never promise

Because "AEO" is a new-sounding label, it attracts a specific kind of overselling that plain SEO mostly grew out of years ago. Four claims should end the conversation immediately.

A guaranteed AI citation. Nobody, including Google, can promise your page will be the one an AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer quotes for a given question, because that selection happens live, per query, based on factors no outside party controls. The goal any honest provider works toward is being cited, linked or mentioned, never a guaranteed rank or a guaranteed appearance, in AI Mode or anywhere else. Google's own AI features page states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary" beyond the SEO fundamentals a page should already have. There is no separate lever a paid provider pulls that Google itself does not describe.

An "llms.txt package." llms.txt is a real, simple proposal, a plain text file linking to a site's key pages, described at llmstxt.org, and I keep one on this site myself. But Google's AI features page is direct on this exact point too: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features." Paying extra for an "llms.txt package" as though it were a ranking lever is paying for a file that, by Google's own account, does not do that specific job.

Bulk AI-generated content. Publishing dozens of AI-written pages to "cover more questions" usually produces thin, near-duplicate pages that fail the same helpful content bar Google has enforced for years. Google's spam policies treat content produced mainly to manipulate rankings, whether AI-generated or not, as a violation that can trigger a manual action against the whole site. A provider proposing volume over depth is proposing risk, not visibility.

Fake or incentivised reviews. Third-party presence should mean real reviews and real directory listings, not a batch of reviews written to order. Past the obvious ethical problem, fabricated reviews are exactly the kind of inconsistent, unverifiable signal that makes an answer engine less confident citing a business, not more.

What AEO services cost in India

I do not sell AEO as its own line item with a separate price tag, and if a provider quotes you one flat "AEO fee" with nothing else attached, ask precisely what that number buys. In my own practice, the six components above sit inside the same SEO retainer I already publish rates for: Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 a month for a freelancer, depending on whether the work is local or national in scope, inside the wider Rs 15,000 to Rs 60,000 freelance retainer range I quote across services, consistent with the channel breakdown in my Pune pricing guide. Question research, answer-first rewrites and FAQ schema happen as part of that regular monthly work, not as a bolt-on invoice.

That is my own scoping choice, not a market law, so it helps to know what the wider Indian market charges when AEO is sold as its own product. Two Indian agency pricing pages I checked while researching this guide, from Digipuush and Reinvent Digital, put dedicated SEO-plus-AEO retainers anywhere from roughly Rs 15,000 a month at the freelancer end to Rs 2,00,000 or more a month for a national or multi-location program, with one national-tier package carrying a separate setup fee of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,50,000 on top. Treat those figures as reported ranges from providers' own published pricing pages, current as of September 2026, not an audited industry rate card, since nobody publishes one.

Source Scope Typical monthly range
My own scopingAEO folded into a freelancer local SEO retainerRs 10,000 to Rs 15,000
My own scopingAEO folded into a freelancer national SEO retainerRs 20,000 to Rs 30,000
Reported market (Digipuush)Standalone AEO/GEO package, entry tierRs 15,000 to Rs 25,000
Reported market (Reinvent Digital)Local SEO plus AEO retainerRs 35,000 to Rs 55,000
Reported market (both)National or multi-location programRs 1,20,000 to Rs 2,00,000+

Whichever number you are quoted, ask the question I ask myself before scoping any retainer: does the fee buy audit, question research, answer-first rewrites, schema, third-party presence and measurement, or does it buy three of the six dressed up as all six.

Freelancer vs agency vs in-house for AEO

The freelancer-versus-agency decision for AEO tracks the same logic as digital marketing generally, with one wrinkle: AEO leans on the same content and technical skills a good SEO freelancer already has, so it rarely justifies hiring a separate specialist on its own.

Option Best fit Watch for
FreelancerOne or two channels, direct access, AEO folded into SEO or content workCapacity if you also need heavy paid ads running at the same time
Agency ("AI SEO agency")Multiple channels at scale, a dedicated content and schema teamA markup on top of the existing SEO fee for a relabelled service
In-houseA marketing coordinator trained on the six components aboveNeeds a senior person's time once to set structure and schema correctly

Searching for an "AI SEO agency in India" mostly surfaces the same agencies that already sell SEO, with AEO added as a new line on the same services page. That is not automatically bad. It usually means the work is done by the same technical SEO team under a newer name, so ask directly whether AEO is a genuinely separate deliverable or a rebadge of work already underway. My fuller freelancer vs agency comparison and how to choose a freelance digital marketer in India cover the wider vetting process if AEO is only part of the scope you are hiring for, and my comparison of digital marketing options in Pune covers where each provider type sits locally.

Ten questions to ask an AEO provider

Whether you are talking to a freelancer, an agency describing itself as an AEO expert in India, or a marketer you already work with who wants to add this to your scope, run through these ten questions before signing anything.

  1. What exactly counts as "AEO work" in this proposal, task by task?
  2. Which pages are you starting with, and why those specifically?
  3. Does the question research come from Search Console and real customer questions, or a guess?
  4. What schema will you add, and can I see an example first?
  5. How will you keep my business details consistent across directories and review sites?
  6. How will you measure this without a guaranteed-citation promise?
  7. Is this billed separately from my existing SEO or content retainer, or folded into it?
  8. What does month one look like compared with month three?
  9. Who owns the content, schema and any accounts once we stop working together?
  10. What would make you tell me AEO is not worth doing yet for my site?

Question ten separates an honest provider from a salesperson faster than any other on this list. Every answer engine I have read about pulls from pages that already carry some baseline credibility, meaning they rank reasonably well or the business has a real, checkable presence. If your core pages are not ranking at all, sitting on page three or beyond, the honest answer is to spend the budget on SEO fundamentals first, then come back to AEO once there is something worth making more citable. A provider with no version of that answer is optimising for your invoice, not your pages.

Question six matters just as much, because it tells you whether the provider understands what they can and cannot show you. A fair answer names query-level tracking in Search Console for the question-shaped terms you targeted, a monthly manual check of the target questions inside Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity to see who gets named, and a plan to keep the content and schema current. An answer that promises a citation count on a slide is describing a number nobody outside Google, OpenAI or Perplexity can actually produce.

How to evaluate an AEO proposal

Once you have a written quote in hand, run it through this five-step check before you sign anything or pay a deposit.

Step 1: Ask for the six components in writing

Request a line-by-line breakdown against audit, question research, answer-first content, schema, third-party presence and measurement. A common pitfall is accepting a one-line "AEO services" bullet inside a larger package with no detail behind it. Verify by checking that each of the six appears somewhere in the written scope, not just in the sales conversation.

Step 2: Check where the question research actually comes from

Ask whether the questions targeted will come from your Search Console data, Google's People Also Ask results and real customer messages, or from a generic keyword list reused across clients. The pitfall is content built around questions nobody in your city actually asks. Verify by requesting the specific list of questions before writing starts, not after.

Step 3: Confirm the pricing sits inside or clearly beside your existing retainer

Ask directly whether this fee replaces part of your current SEO or content spend, adds to it, or duplicates work you are already paying for elsewhere. The pitfall is paying twice for the same rewritten page under two different service names. Verify by listing every provider currently touching your content and checking for overlap.

Step 4: Ask for the measurement plan before you sign

Get a specific answer on how progress will be tracked: which queries, which report, and how often you will see it. The pitfall is a vague promise of "AI visibility reports" with no named metric behind it. Verify by asking to see a sample report from an existing client, with names redacted if needed.

Step 5: Get a three-month scope and a walk-away point

Insist on a defined three-month scope rather than an open-ended annual contract, with a clear point at which either side can stop. The pitfall is a twelve-month lock-in signed before either of you knows whether the approach is working. Verify by checking the contract actually states a review date and an exit clause in writing, not just a verbal assurance.

A sample three-month AEO scope

To make this concrete, here is the kind of phased scope I would set for a small business site with roughly ten to twenty existing pages, the same structure I use in more depth in my longer AEO strategy guide.

Month 1: audit and question research

List every page that already ranks on page one or two for any query, pull the actual questions tied to those queries from Search Console, and shortlist five to eight pages worth rewriting first. Nothing gets published yet. This month is diagnosis, and skipping it is the single most common reason AEO work underperforms.

Month 2: answer-first rewrites and schema

Rewrite the opening of each shortlisted page into a direct, complete answer, restructure headings around the real questions found in month one, and add FAQPage and Article schema, plus LocalBusiness schema where a physical location applies. Validate every schema block in Google's Rich Results Test before it goes live.

Month 3: third-party presence and the first measurement read

Check name, address and phone number consistency across directories and review platforms, fix any mismatches, and pull the first Search Console read on impressions and position for the target questions. This is also when I run the first manual check across Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity for the target questions, to see who currently gets named, current as of the check date.

How to measure whether AEO is working

Measurement has to start from what Google actually reports, not a number a provider invents. AI Overview and AI Mode impressions are not a separate hidden metric: Google's own guidance confirms this traffic sits inside the standard Performance report under the Web search type, so the first and most honest measurement step is watching impressions and average position for the question-shaped queries you targeted, the same report you already use for ordinary SEO.

Alongside that, a manual check has real value even though it cannot be automated into a dashboard. Search your target questions directly in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity every few weeks and note which pages get named, current as of whenever you run the check, since these products change month to month. This tells you whether a competitor is winning the citation for a question you are targeting, which is useful diagnostic information even without a guaranteed way to fix it immediately.

Resist the urge to judge AEO on a single month. Citations tend to follow organic ranking progress rather than run on a separate clock, so a page that only reached page one last month is unlikely to show any AI citation movement yet. Give a genuinely new program at least one full quarter before judging whether it is working, and hold the provider to the measurement plan agreed in step four above rather than an informal sense of whether things "feel" more visible.

Common mistakes and honest limits

The most common mistake is treating AEO as a one-time project rather than a maintenance habit. Pages that keep earning citations are the ones someone keeps revisiting: updating stale prices, tightening a vague answer, adding a question that started showing up in Search Console. A provider who disappears after month three has not actually finished the job.

A second common mistake is chasing every AI platform equally from day one. Optimising evenly for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features spreads effort thin. Start with the surface your own customers already use to search, usually Google's own answer formats for a local or service business in India, and get that right before chasing the rest.

A related mistake is optimising content for AI citation while ignoring whether the page is indexed and crawlable everywhere it matters. None of this works if a page cannot be found in the first place. My Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow guide covers the twenty-minute technical hygiene task that AEO work quietly assumes is already done, and my guide to optimising for ChatGPT and AI search covers the crawler side specifically.

The honest limit is this: AEO will not turn an unranked page into a cited one, and it will not manufacture demand for a business nobody is searching for locally. It decides who gets picked from among pages that already qualify, the same way appearing in Google's AI Mode depends on ranking well enough to be eligible in the first place. If your business is not yet showing up for its most obvious local searches, that is where your next rupee should go, not into AEO. If you already have that foundation and want a second opinion on a proposal you have been quoted, or simply want an honest read on whether your site is ready for this work yet, I am glad to look at it, no pressure either way.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO a separate service from SEO?

No. AEO extends SEO rather than replacing it, using the same technical foundation: indexable pages, reasonable load times and baseline authority. What AEO adds is a layer of question research, answer-first rewriting, schema and entity consistency on top of that foundation, so it should be scoped as extra work inside an existing SEO or content retainer, not sold as an unrelated product with its own separate logic.

Can anyone guarantee my site gets cited by ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews?

No, and a provider who claims this should be treated as a red flag. Citation inside an AI answer happens live, per query, based on factors no outside party controls, and Google's own guidance for AI features states there are no special optimisations that guarantee inclusion beyond normal SEO fundamentals. The honest goal is to be cited, linked or mentioned more often over time, never a guaranteed placement or ranking.

How much should I budget for AEO in India?

If you already pay for SEO, budget nothing extra: fold question research, answer-first rewrites and schema into that existing retainer, which typically runs Rs 10,000 to Rs 60,000 a month for a freelancer depending on scope. If you are buying AEO as its own standalone product, Indian agency pricing pages report roughly Rs 15,000 to Rs 2,00,000 or more a month depending on scale, though no provider publishes an audited rate card.

What is an AI SEO agency and how is it different from a regular SEO agency?

In practice, very little. Most agencies advertising as an AI SEO agency in India are existing SEO teams that added answer-first content, schema and AI-crawler checks to their service list. That is not necessarily bad, but ask directly whether the AI-specific work is a genuinely separate deliverable with its own tasks, or the same SEO work relabelled with a newer, more searchable name.

How long before AEO work shows any results?

There is no fixed timeline, and a provider who quotes one exact number should be questioned closely. Citations tend to follow organic ranking progress rather than run on a separate clock, so a page that already ranks on page one for a question can start earning citations within weeks of a rewrite, while a page with no ranking history first needs the underlying SEO work to catch up.
